Upon our arrival, the staff at the entrance said TWO BIG groups just went in before you guys. I expected this meant there was a maximum number allowed per hour, and there would be crowd controls of some sort. The tickets are NOT cheap, and there are designated specific time in 15 minutes intervals that you have to choose when you buy the tickets. However, this was one of the WORSE exhibitions I have ever experienced compared to all the ones I have seen around the world. Despite a number of warnings from other friends who visited in April, I still wanted to see it as we are Van Gogh fans, and it's rare to have such art exhibitions in Hong Kong.

We visited Van Gogh Alive in Hong Kong today. And it pains me that today I became another statistic in their PR machine.

How this has racked up as many global venues as it has is beyond me. The signage to find the venue was a joke. If you were to have taken their recommendation of walking around to really 'get it' you would have annoyed every person sitting on the floor, probably thinking "HOW much did I pay for this? SERIOUSLY?!!!" There was not a one (no crannies either, for that matter). Their claim of it being a thrilling, multisensory experience is simply Some Words that Mean Nothing. Honestly, I have seen Sixth form art students do better. There is also a mock up of the Bedroom at Arles. Rather than the promise of transcending time and space, there are instead some smallish information boards hung in a room - rather like any mediocre, lazy and cheap exhibition of anything EVER. Except maybe the world is populated with people like me, who go on trust. HOW has this become the world's most visited 'experience' like this is beyond me. I have taken such pleasure in introducing my daughter to the world of visual art so was therefore very excited with this exhibition and impressed by its claimed statistics (admittedly I didn't do any research beyond their own PR. I am a History of Art graduate and sometime artist. Whilst bored school kids sit around and think "at least we're not at school". It is nothing but the Emporer's New Clothes. And I paid handsomely to get in too (including the nonsense $60 booking fee). I travelled from Discovery Bay to Kowloon Bay (1.5 hours via bus and MTR) with my 5 year old daughter for this. I only wish I had read the reviews before buying the tickets - I would have saved myself time and money! Do yourself a favour and stay away!!! I honestly have no idea why anyone would want to go to this - it offers the same level of art immersion as Googling ‘Van Gogh’ and reading his Wikipedia page. It is also small space-wise there were too many people in each room, and we couldn’t get a clear view of any exhibit feature without a bunch of people’s heads backing the way.Īll in all, it was probably the worst exhibit I have ever had the misfortune of going to. The exhibit is small - it consists of just an introduction area and two galleries, with a drawing room at the end - and we finished walking through in just half an hour. Add to this the jabbering of dozens of small children, who were running around uncontrolled by parents or staff, and you have yourself a ‘multi-sensory’ exhibit, indeed. Turns out, that just means classical music playing in the background as a slideshow of paintings is projected on to white screens. The tickets are not cheap, even by museum standards - for the same price you could buy a ticket to an actual art museum and see REAL paintings, not images of paintings on styrofoam boards with a two-sentence blurb that any fifth grader with access to the internet could do.Įven so, I was curious about the interactive, multi-sensory experience that they were advertising, which is why we decided to go. A fabulous addition to any party night Karafun is guaranteed to get people up and singing. If you don’t want to waste your hard-earned money on what might be the worst exhibit of any kind EVER, then don’t go! With versions for mobile devices as well as on computer it's completely on-the-go. Simply choose a song from the vast library of music on offer and sing along to the graphical representation of the lyrics on screen.
